Shiny, thriving, fearless and fantastic… It’s likely that, if you’re a woman in business like I am, you’ll have heard these words during your career, either in the names of membership programmes and Facebook groups, or perhaps in Instagram posts or reels. We are called to be pioneers, to be brave and bold, to dare to do things, to step up and ‘own it’.

 

As a self-employed woman – I am a writer, coach and podcaster – I am surrounded by this narrative of empowerment, and all with good intention. But, for me, the wording we use around business as women is a form of toxic positivity, and I find myself deafened by the noise. I also wonder whether those who use this sort of language are truly feeling the ‘vibe’ they’re encouraging women like me to be or aspire to.
