This week, as her fans stood outside court calling for her freedom, Britney Spears bravely gave evidence in her own conservatorship case.
Her appearance follows a thirteen-year battle for the performer to regain control of her own life – and it brought some of the darkest moments of that time out into the light.
In her testimony, Spears described how, under her father’s leadership, the conservatorship had forced her to change her mental health medication, replacing a prescription she’d been on for eight years with lithium, because she had asked for a break in her tough schedule. It’s clear that her father’s power hinges on her mental state and, stemming from her well-documented breakdown in 2008, Britney described how he and her management had controlled her whole life.
