The world hasn’t been short on gloom lately – so let’s start with a major win, shall we?
Last week, the House of Commons changed the law to ensure that MPs suspended for bullying or sexual harassment can face a recall petition. This means that constituents will now have the mechanism to call a by-election if enough of them want it – a punishment previously reserved for other offences, including misusing office stationary. This is a huge win, especially for women, who are more likely to be bullied or harassed at work.
This is a true moment of celebration for many reasons, not least that it shows the toxic culture in Westminster is finally being successfully challenged. For while victories like these can sometimes appear to come out of nowhere, political wins don’t just happen. Activists and campaigners work tirelessly, often for years, to get these issues into the public and political consciousness.
