It’s not many people who would leave a glamorous international career in broadcasting to renovate a dilapidated castle. But Stef Burgon isn’t most people.
In fact, the Newcastle native and her husband, Simon Hunt, are probably the unlikeliest castle owners you could ever meet. Having gotten together in Dubai, where breakfast radio host Stef was a household name and Simon was an advertising high-flyer, the couple were more used to cosmopolitan coffee shop life than castle renovation when, in 2014, they fell in love with Scotland while on a rain-filled road trip. Within a year, they’d bought a dilapidated castle on the Argyll coast (it cost less than a London parking space, they laugh) and started planning a whole new life.
