You might have expected the focus of this year’s Queen’s speech to be about fixing our broken social care system, or rescuing childcare providers who are about to go under along with women’s employment prospects. Instead, the government has decided to press on with plans to require photographic ID from people who want to vote in elections.

 

People from across the political spectrum have been quick to point out that this is a dangerous attack on our democracy. They are right of course, but not only in the ways that they imagine.
