On Friday evening, Northern Ireland learnt that the DUP had a new leader – Edwin Poots.

 

Elected by only 19 votes (his sole challenger got 17), the party’s new chief takes the reins following concerns its outgoing leader, Arlene Foster, was too moderate. Certainly, this appointment would make many right-wing candidates look tame by comparison – but just who is Edwin Poots, what are his policies and what does this mean for equality in Northern Ireland?
