As Boris Johnson guffawed his way through Prime Minister’s Questions last week, it was hard to believe that, outside the Commons, the UK was in the midst of the greatest economic decline in modern history.


More than 44,000 people have now died of coronavirus in the UK. Tens of thousands more have seen their livelihoods decimated. But when it came to a question about the continued closure of the beauty industry, our dear leader felt the time was right for a joke about the need to get his nails done.


Small wonder that the tens of thousands employed in the beauty industry – most of them women – failed to see the funny side.
